UNESCO's Delegation attended High Level WSIS Regional Meeting in Bavaro

The meeting was held in Bavaro (Dominican Republic) 29-31 January 2003 organized by INDOTEL (Telecommunications Dominican Institute), and CEPAL (Latin American and Caribbean Economical Commission). A pre-conference workshop entitled "ICT at the service of Development", was attended by representatives from the UNESCO's Regional Office for Communication and Information (ORCILAC) based in Quito, Ecuador attended a workshop.

The objectives of the meeting were the development of a regional evaluation of the opportunities and challenges that the Information Society brings to the LAC Region and at the same time advance in a Regional position for the WSIS

Mr. Abdul W. Khan, Assistant Director General for Communication and Information, head UNESCO's delegation, which include the Director of the Regional Office for Communication and Information based in Quito, the five CI Regional Advisers from UNESCO Offices in the Region (Montevideo, Quito, San José and Kingston), and the Director of the UNESCO Office in Santo Domingo.

Mr. Khan met with all the head of delegations in a lunch that was presided by Dominican Republic Vice-President and Secretary of State for Education, Mrs. Milagros Ortiz Bosch, opportunity in which, the Head of Cuban Delegation invited all the participants to follow-up this Conference at the IX INFOLAC Consultation Meeting to be held 14- 16 May in Varadero, Cuba.

A singular meeting with a lot of NGOs representatives were spontaneous held at the garden of the Bavaro Convention Centre, with the UNESCO's Delegation and with the attendance of Mr. Adama Samassekou, President of PrepCom. The attendants unanimously requested to UNESCO and to the WSIS Secretariat, to facilitate the organization of a Latin American and the Caribbean NGOs meeting. The proposal was to hold this meeting 8-9 April 2003 in coincidence with the II Regional Meeting of Somos@Telecentros, to be held 9-11 April 2003 in Quito, Ecuador. This Telecenters meeting is been organized under the auspice of UNESCO, the World Bank and the Institute for Connectivity in the Americas.

As a contribution to the Bavaro Conference a CD ROM prepared by ORCILAC UNESCO-Quito, which contents the declaration and final reports of the consultation meetings held in Florianopolis, Itacuruça, Margarita Island, Rio de Janeiro, and Tegucigalpa, and also with two different consultant reports on the Information Society in Latin America and the Caribbean, was distributed to the participants.
