  1. Project description

  1. Introduction

After fifteen years of experience in the use, application and innovation of information technologies in libraries, of information processing, editing for CD-ROM support, and, more recently, in didactic multimedia and network technologies; the University of Colima (UdeC), through the General Co-ordination of Information Technologies and Services (CGSTI) and its Technology, Society and Information Program (TS-I) wishes to join once more in UNESCOís efforts to link these technologies with specialised and postgraduate education.

In effect, UdeCís well trajectory, which in 1995 led to it being sponsored by UNESCO as a Regional Centre for the Production of Compact Discs and New Information Technologies, had its origin in its desire to make information and library services and resources more efficient. This concern became reality in the Integral Automated Library System of the University of Colima (Siabuc), a computer programme developed completely in Spanish, the permanent updating of which provides more than 400 libraries and their users in Latin America and the Caribbean with rapid, quality information services.
